Negroni Week June 6th – 12th

Come.  Imbibe.  Do good.

From June 6th to 12th, celebrate Negroni Week at the girl & the the fig.

From Negroniweek.com:

Negroni Week, presented by Imbibe Magazine and Campari, […] launched in 2013 as a celebration of one of the world’s great cocktails and an effort to raise money for charitable causes around the world. From 2013 to 2014, Negroni Week grew from more than 100 participating bars to more than 1,300 participating bars around the world and more than $120,000 raised for charities.

Of course, our charity of choice is one very near and dear to our hearts: Pets Lifeline of Sonoma Valley, where Sondra adopted her sweet Lucie years ago.  And it’s only fitting that two of our signature Negroni Week cocktails be named for Sondra’s girls!  The “Sophie Sbagliato” is one of the yummy concoctions we’ll be pouring from the 6th to the 12th.

Timmy Classico – Sonoma Brothers Gin, Campari, Boissiere Vermouth, Orange Peel

Sophie Sbagliato – Campari, Sweet Vermouth, Sparkling Wine, Orange Twist

Cowboy Chocolate – Cocao-nib infused Campari, Sonoma Brothers Gin, Boissiere Sweet Vermouth, Orange Peel

Negroni Blanc – Gin, Suze Aperitif, Carpano Bianco, Lemon Peel

Wine Wednesday: Westerhold’s 2011 Syrah

As you may know, since the very beginning the girl & the fig has boasted an exclusively Rhône-alone” wine list.

We’ve always loved that featuring unique Rhône wines gives us an opportunity to begin a conversation with our guests, perhaps introduce them to something new, as well as to present talented and innovative producers we believe in.

In honor of “Wine Wednesday,” a little about one of our beloved California Rhône producers –

This week: Westerhold’s 2011 Syrah!

Westerhold Family Vineyards is located southeast of Santa Rosa in the Bennett Valley AVA of Sonoma County. They are a small winery dedicated to the production of estate grown Syrah and Pinot Noir.

Lured from Los Angeles to Sonoma County in 2006 with the dream of farming our own vineyard and handcrafting wine from our grapes, the Westerhold family found the perfect property in Bennett Valley to put down roots and raise their children.  There was a small Syrah vineyard planted on the property, and in 2008 the planted additional 3 acres of Pinot Noir.

Crafting wines exclusively from grapes grown on their home vineyard,  they craft Syrah and Pinot Noir which showcase the unique flavor intensity that the estate site yeilds, while also respecting and reflecting the differences each vintage brings.

Tasting Notes:

The nose of the 2011 Westerhold Family Vineyards Syrah shows beautiful strawberry and Bing cherry scents, and has amazing complexity in the form of sandalwood, fresh mint, and a bit of white pepper.  Texturally, the wine is very round and supple, and the tannis are perfectly intergrated…  The aciditiy is still fresh and a good complement to pork and lighter meats.  The finish is long, and it slowly dissapates on the palate, leaving you a remnant of the beautiful, fresh, clean flavors. ~Russell Bevan, Winemaker

Pairs Well With:

At the girl & the fig we’d recommend pairing the Westerhold 2011 Syrah with our local chicken thighs (meyer lemon spaetzle, english peas, pea tendrils) or our pork belly sandwich (black pepper remoulade, pickled cabbage, brioche bun, frites).

At home, try steak lettuce wraps or carne asada tacos.
