Lighting of the Snowmen @ Cornerstone – December 3rd


This year, the Lighting of the Snowmen kicks off with a festival and actual lighting on SATURDAY, December 3rd, and the display will remain up through the end of December for all to enjoy!

The festival will feature music, kids crafts, wine + beer tasting, delicious food, festive decoration and more!Parking will be available at Cornerstone (until the lots are filled) and then at the Sonoma Valley Airport, located next to Cornerstone (shuttle service will be provided).Admission to the festival is FREE and there is a $10 charge for parking.

Wine Wednesday: Cochon 2013 Red Blend, Whole Hog, California


As you may know, since the very beginning the girl & the fig has boasted an exclusively Rhône-alone” wine list.

We’ve always loved that featuring unique Rhône wines gives us an opportunity to begin a conversation with our guests, perhaps introduce them to something new, as well as to present talented and innovative producers we believe in.

In honor of “Wine Wednesday,” a little about one of our beloved Rhône producers –

This week: Cochon 2013 Red Blend, Whole Hog, California

The story of Cochon Wines 

Cochon Wines is the brainchild of Adam Webb and Mike Kuenz, owners of Odisea Wine Company, which is a Rhone and Iberian specialist using California grapes. Cochon Wines is located in the Napa Valley and our fruit is harvested from vineyards planted within two hours away from the winery. At this range we can insure the fruit arrives in the most pristine condition to begin its journey from grapes to wine. We buy our fruit from small family owned vineyards, which in some cases are being farmed by the third generation on their land.

Tasting notes:

Shows a deep brooding opaque purple color. Aromas of spicy black raspberry, blackberry pie, ripe plum and briary loganberry fruit mingle with hints of white pepper, cocoa, crushed rocks, smoke and savory spices.


At the girl & the fig we’d recommend pairing Cochon 2013 Red Blend, Whole Hog with duck confit (creamy corn, braised greens, brandied cherry-duck jus), sonoma mountain beef burger (grilled onions, house-made pickles, frites), and hard cheeses.

At home enjoy with Braised lamb shanks with creamy polenta and roasted vegetables.

Cruising Sonoma: Beer Tasting

Everyone knows Sonoma County as Wine Country, but our award-winning beer and spirits are garnering quite a bit of attention in recent years.

No matter where you’re visiting in the county, there is stellar craft brew nearby. Word is getting out: these five breweries not only have taprooms, but also offer tours and tastings! Now there is no excuse not to visit!



Sonoma Springs Brewing Company

With over twenty fresh beers on tap, the taproom serves as a great location to plant oneself to try all of Sonoma Springs beers.

They offer tastings Mon-Tue 4-9pm and Wed-Sun 1-9pm.

Sonoma Springs Brewing Company is currently expanding and expect to be offering tours of their brewhouse by the end of the year.


Prohibition Spirits Distillery tasting room @ Cornerstone

Prohibition Spirits’ has opened a new craft distillery tasting room at Cornerstone, in Sonoma. Taste Prohibition Spirits’ libations, Limoncello, Brandies, Gins and more. Open daily.




Find Lagunitas TapRooms and brewery at their Petaluma location. Tasting tours are daily, free, and no reservations are required. You must be 21 or older for the tasting tour (don’t forget to bring your ID or passport!)

The hours for the tours are as follows:

Mon-Wed 1pm & 3pm, Thurs-Fri 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, Sat-Sun 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm



Bear Republic

Bear Republic offers a tour of their Healdsburg Brewery on Saturdays by appointment only. You must contact the Bar Manager Ryan Lindecker, Tuesday-Thursday by 11am to schedule your tour. (Note: closed toe shoes are required.)



Spirit Works

Distillery tours are Friday-Sunday at 5pm and are $20 per person. The tour includes an in depth look at the path our grain takes through our production facility to become Spirit Works Distillery product. We conclude the tour with a full tasting of our spirits.

Tasting Room is open Wednesday-Sunday From 11am-5pm. Reservations Are Not Required.

We were well aware of the world-class beer being produced locally but we started to notice a trend; beer geeks were coming from far and wide to Sonoma County just to visit our favorite local breweries. Now everybody knows that Sonoma County is famous for its wine but when our breweries started taking home medals year after year, the word got out: There’s some damn fine beer being made in these parts. Sure the wine is good, don’t get us wrong, but we want to revise the familiar moniker of ‘Wine Country.’ That’s why our official motto is…

“Welcome to Craft Beer Country”

Call it what you will, but to us this is Beer Country.


from the kitchen: Fig-Braised Beef Short Ribs


Fig Braised Beef Short Ribs
Serves 6

For the Marinade:

  • 6 short ribs (10 oz. each, boneless)
  • 2 tablespoons sliced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • 1 tablespoon chopped thyme
  • ½ cup red wine
  • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon tamari
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Mix together garlic, salt, pepper, herbs, ½ cup red wine, ½ cup oil, tamari and Worcestershire.  Pour over ribs and marinate for at least 12 hours.

For the Sauce:

  • salt & pepper
  • 4 tablespoons blended oil
  • 3 celery stalks, medium dice
  • 1 carrot, peeled, medium dice
  • 2 medium onions, medium dice
  • 3 Roma tomatoes, rough chop
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 8 cups veal stock
  • 2 cups diced black mission figs
  • 1 bouquet garni

Remove ribs from marinade, scrape excess items off and pat dry.  Season with salt & pepper.Heat a large sauté pan over high heat, sear short ribs on all sides until heavily browned.  Remove from pan and place in a braising pot.

Add carrots, onions, celery to pan used for searing ribs, and cook over medium heat until vegetables are caramelized.  Add tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes.  Deglaze with red wine and reduce by half.  Add to braising pan with 8 cups of veal stock and bring to a simmer.  Add figs, and bouquet garni, cover and place pan in oven and roast for 4 hours, or until ribs are fork tender.  Remove ribs from oven, and let them cool to room temperature.  Remove ribs from sauce, strain sauce, before returning to pan over medium heat.  Reduce sauce by half and add ribs back to heat through.

This week: Kivelstadt Cellars 2014 Red Blend, Father’s Watch

About the winemaker: Jordan Kivelstadt

As Founder and Head Winemaker at Kivelstadt Cellars, Jordan seeks to create wines that stand out. His passion for food and wine permeates everything he does. By day he is the Founder and CEO of Free Flow Wines, a wine on tap company focused on improving the quality and sustainability of the wine we drink in restaurants. He initially cut his teeth in wine working harvests in California, Argentina, Chile and Australia. Kivelstadt Cellars is Jordan’s creative outlet and brings balance to his daily responsibilities at Free Flow. He pours all of those experiences into innovating in the wine industry and improving our wines at Kivelstadt Cellars vintage after vintage.


Tasting Notes:

Our most versatile red wine, Father’s Watch is a Rhone style blend made from 50% Syrah from our estate vineyard, 25% Grenache, and 25% Carignane from Venturi Vineyard. The Carignane and Grenache bring high tone fruit, approachability and energy to balance out the darker, earthier Syrah in the blend. The wine sees 10% new french oak for 16 months and is our most popular red wine.


At the girl & the fig we’d recommend pairing Kivelstadt Cellars 2014 Red Blend, Father’s Watch with duck confit (french green lentils, braised greens, brandied cherry-duck jus), sonoma mountain beef burger (grilled onions, house-made pickles, frites) and hard cheese. 

At home try grilled pork chop with broccolini, and apple mostarda.
